From Concept to Creation: Sustainable Product Manuals for Established & Sons

Towards the end of 2020, I was approached by the Product Development team at Established & Sons to re-design the Product Manuals - a printed informational and instruction booklet customers receive with their orders. Not only did I have to consider sustainability in my design, I also had to design a manual which would work across print and digital, and was easy for customers to follow.

For tackling sustainability, I chose to use elasticated fabric bands for the binding as they can be removed and reused by the customer. Using this binding method also means the manual can be easily taken apart, for example if the customer wants to look at the instructions without having to flick through the booklet.

In selecting materials, sustainability remained at the forefront of every decision. I opted for Cairn Eco Kraft and Conqueror Wove papers, both boasting 100% recycled material content. These choices not only reflected Established & Sons' commitment to sustainability but also communicated their dedication to quality and responsibility to their customers.

As well as conceptualising the overarching design for the Product Manuals, I was asked to design an additional printed asset which would act as a ‘Quality Assurance’ and ‘Authentication’ card for suppliers to date and sign when packing a customer order. Utilising the flexibility of the elasticated binding, I designed a small folded card which can be inserted by the suppliers between the cover and inner pages of the manuals.
